I lifted this from the On30 Conspiracy yahoo group...
switched to On30!
#10: You discover that the cat thinks your N scale locomotives are something
akin to mice... when it leaps up on the train table and bats a hundred + dollar
Atlas locomotive across the room...
#9: You find out that you need your optivisor on, not to assemble couplers or do
fine detailing work, but to SEE your new N scale ore cars!
#8: You discover that even in N scale, the modern intermodal yard you want to
build, capable of servicing a prototypical intermodal train... will take up
roughly 10 linear feet, most of that just black asphalt...
#7: that the same intermodal yard in HO will be more than 20 feet long, and the
trains (if prototypical length) will be 30 feet long or more!
#6: Did you know that one cat hair can effectively destroy the mechanism in an N
scale diesel? Neither did I until it happened...
#5: That same cat hair in an HO shay? Yeah, takes about 7-8 hours of
painstaking work with an optivisor to remove from the formerly mobile gearing
assembly. The On30 locomotive have similar issues, but the gears are (in
theory) a little more robust and won't need replacing after the cat hair is
removed....
#4: When you realize that you have spend thousands of dollars on your HO gauge
layout... and due to the scale you've got a half dozen locomotives, lots of
freight cars... but... your layout? Yeah, the benchwork to fill your basement
alone took most of the money. Gosh, O scale buildings are BIG, but you don't
need anywhere NEAR as many of them!
#3: About that money thing - remember that in HO a "proper" train requires a lot
of cars. Those short narrow gauge trains are looking more appealing all the
time, aren't they?
#2: Hey, Bachmann makes R-T-R stuff, and even the kits are big enough you don't
need tweezers to assemble everything!
and the #1 reason most people convert to On30...
Because On30 is funner! :D
Okay, maybe not so much a top ten list, but still valid points, yes?
